2017 Hyundai i30

We have already spotted the next-gen of the 2017 Hyundai i30
hatchback undergoing testing.  The automaker hopes to
boost its sales worldwide with the new model. Hyundai has
revamped the model inside-out.

In addition, the automaker has equipped the hatch with latest
technologies and safety features to rival the likes of
Volkswagen Golf and Ford Focus. Read along to find out more:

2017 Hyundai i30 Exterior

After redesigning the i20, Hyundai has decided to give the i30
an all-rounded revamp as well.  The new model has sharper
lines that add a dose of aggressiveness to the model. The model
is however immediately recognizable as the i30. At the front,
the model features a longer engine hood courtesy of the new
A-pillars which have been moved backwards.

Hyundai has also used the Cascading grille on the new i30. The
grille comes with a new mesh and sharper hexagonal surrounds.
Flanking the grille are three projector LED headlights. The
headlights are angled towards the model’s snout to make the
front look sportier. Below the grille is a revised bumper which
features triangular intakes on the sides. The side intakes are
integrated with LED DRLs. The center air intake on the bumper
looks more like a splitter.

Over to the sides, the i30 features a sloping roofline with a
prominent character line just beneath the windows. The
B-pillars as well as the mirror caps have been blacked-out.
Buyers can opt for either 15-inch steel wheels or alloy wheels
which are standard. 10-spoke, two-tone, 16- or 17-inch alloy
wheels are available options.

At the rear, the i30 features new LED taillights, a revised
tailgate integrated with a new spoiler as well as a revamped
bumper. Hyundai has added extra lights under the i30s tailgate
to give it a unique look.

Overall, the body is quite aerodynamic with a 0.3 coefficient
of drag which is very impressive for a hatchback. The model
will be available in 12 colors with Polar White and Engine Red
being the only solid colors.

2017 Hyundai i30 Interior

The new interior design cannot be compared to that of the
outgoing model since it has been completely redesigned with
better quality materials. To start with, the dash has a
horizontal layout while the center stack has a ‘floating’
touch-screen. The screen integrates media, navigation and other
technologies. The new instrument cluster has blue accents and
white dials while drivers will love the new heated, 3-spoke
multifunction steering wheel.

As for the upholstery, base models feature a quality cloth to
keep the model in the affordable realm. However, for extra
dollars, buyers can have their i30 seats, door panels and dash
wrapped in an authentic “cow hide”. The driver’s seat has
memory functions. Buyers can opt between Oceanids Black and
Slate Gray/Oceanids Black for cloth or leather upholstered
models. Indigo/Blue/Oceanids Black is exclusive to
leather-upholstered models. As far as interior room is
concerned, the automaker has promised segment-leading roominess
(official details are not yet out). The model offers a 13.9
cubic feet of cargo space.

Tech-wise, the i30 comes with a wireless inductive charging
pad, a dynamic rear camera, a USB port and Bluetooth as
standard features.  An 8-inch navigation system with a
7-year subscription to TomTom LIVE, Android Auto, Apple CarPlay
and 3D maps are available options.

Safety is also well taken care of; it features front collision
warning with autonomous emergency braking, blind spot warning,
automatic cruise control, lane keep assist, rear cross traffic
alert and driver attention alert. 7 airbags complete the list
of available safety features.

Engine Specs and performance

The i30 features a number of engines. The base model features
three gasoline engines and a diesel mill. The base gasoline
engine is a 1.4 L, 4-cylinder, naturally aspirated engine which
produces 99 horses. This engine is paired with a 6-speed manual
transmission system.

The second gasoline mill is a 1.0 L, 3-cylinder turbocharged
mill. It produces 118 hp and 125 lb-ft of torque. It is also
paired to a 6-speed manual gearbox. The most potent gasoline
mill is a turbocharged 1.4 L, 4-cylinder engine good for 138 hp
and 178 lb-ft of torque. In addition to the standard 6-speed
manual gearbox, this engine will get an optional 7-speed dual
clutch transmission system.

Enthusiasts of diesel mills are not left out. The automaker
offers a 1.6 L, turbodiesel mill in three variations. The base
produces 94 hp; the mid iteration offers 108 hp while the most
powerful iteration of the mill produces 131 hp. The most
powerful iteration (131 hp) produces 203 lb-ft of torque. The
diesel engines are mated to the 6-speed manual gearbox as
standard; 7-speed dual clutch system is offered as an option.

Price and release date

Hyundai will not risk varying the price of the new i30
significantly, as that would affect its sales due to fierce
competition in this segment. As such, I expect the prices to
vary only slightly from the current prices.

Currently, the base model has an MSRP of $17,330. The model
will be released to the public during the upcoming Paris Motor
show in October.

Competition

While this segment features many competing models, two stand
out; they are the Volkswagen
Golf and the Ford
Focus. The new 2017 Hyundai i30 will thus face huge
competition from these two models. However, keeping its price
under these two models will sway many price conscious buyers.
